TED to Begin Sales of Akorri’s Cross-domain Management Software for the
Unification and Visualization of Virtual Environment Applications and IT Infrastructures
Tokyo Electron Device Limited (TED; headquarters: Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama; president: Toshiaki Sunagawa) has entered into an exclusive distributorship agreement with Akorri, Inc. (headquarters: Littleton, Massachusetts, United States) and will begin sales on April 21, 2009 in Japan of Akorri’s BalancePoint™, a software product that manages the performance of applications, servers, and storage systems in a virtual environment by linking the three.
BalancePoint manages the performance of applications and IT infrastructures in a virtual environment in a unified manner, helping to promptly detect declines in system performance, predict troubles in advance, and plan countermeasures to deal with the problems. Cross-domain management covering physical and virtual servers, external storage systems, and applications will enable precise visualization of the operating condition of applications that system administrators essentially want to know about.
What system administrators are particularly interested in is not only the operational status of devices that comprise the system but also whether its applications and services are operating in a normal and satisfactory way. Up to now, a single operating system has occupied a server’s resources, allowing the system administrator to determine its operational status using chronological data (such as CPU utilization), but in the server virtual environment it has become difficult to accurately determine operational status because of factors that include the intervention of hypervisors* and the effects of virtual servers.
Paying attention to application-level response time and throughput (IOPS**), BalancePoint mathematically processes those two performance indicators to analyze and present operational status. It can also prevent over-provisioning by indicating the optimal performance levels in specific figures, thus making possible cost reductions without the need to purchase unnecessary equipment.
Product features include:
- ・Indicate the connection and operating environment of physical/virtual servers, storage systems,
and applications, in the form of topology maps - ・Show on topology maps the location where a defect has occurred or may occur
- ・Analyze trends in input/output traffic from physical/virtual servers to external storage systems
to automatically set upper and lower thresholds to that traffic in a dynamic way and predict
traffic patterns over a 48-hour period - ・Output a table (scorecard) of details on operating conditions for each of the physical / virtual
servers, hypervisors, applications, and external storage systems - ・Eliminate the necessity to add agents to the physical/virtual server operating system managed
Support structure:
TED has a range of maintenance and support service options available, including a service to provide support for the analysis of unclear phenomena that arise after implementation.

* Hypervisor: A control program to implement virtual servers from server virtualization vendors
** IOPS (input output per second): The number of inputs and outputs (read/write processing) that can be performed by a server for storage systems in one second
